Hi Folks, a friend brought over a Bounty Hunter VLF/SPD detector with some problems. Thought I would put them out to the list and see if anyone had any sugestions.

Symtoms: Apply power and you get "full" deflection on the meter and no audio. This is in any mode. Have searched for a schematic with no luck, also don't have an operators manual for it. Anyone ever run into this problem befor? Where to look? Also sugested repair?

Also any usfull mods to this unit, IE depth or sensativity? Would appriciate any sugestions on this one. Great forum Mr. Carl, glad you brought it up.

Ps, He has a couple of "Whites detectors with the same exact problem, any thoughts on these.

What model is it? I have an RB5 (Red Baron jr) for which I have traced out the circuit schematic and the RB7 is practically identical. As soon as I redraw it in a CAD program I will post it on the web page.

Keith Wills does detector repair, I have a link to his web page in the metal detector section. He once told me that a common problem with the RB's is the power supply circuit. There is a dual opamp that is set up as a regulator for both rails so this might be your problem if one side is out.

Have not tried any mods yet but they should be fairly simple.

It Is a Red Baron TR/SPD discriminator

Q; Is this a PI unit?

He has a Coinmaster Geb and Geb Disc. Both with the same problem,

I have 2 old Golmaster's The TR versions and a 5000 d, with the same problem, Just got through moving and want to start on these, About time to start making some headway.

Also any mods for the Gold masters?

No, the RB's were VLF motion discriminators. I don't recall that BH ever made a PI detector.

Again, I would start with the voltage regulators. At the very least the battery check should work. I have to wonder whether these units are worth a lot of time or money to get them repaired. I've been messing with some of this old stuff just to figure out how they work, but I would not bother to take them into the field. I am always looking for junkers to reverse engineer so if you want to get rid of anything please let me know.

Sorry, not too familiar with these.
