I read through the article and found nothing suggesting a length limit so maybe the formula is valid for short coils like your measurements suggest. Probably needs a slight "fudge factor" added.

The only source I can find right now is Mouser, 1lb/$12 or 8lb/$75. Have you ever tried wire wrapping wire instead? Thicker insulation should give lower interwinding capacitance. More expensive, tho.

I have a Geometrics 803 mag. I believe I have the same remote (land) sensor you

are referring to. However, I also have a sensor for marine use which is much,

much larger and additionally has fins.

The marine sensor came with my unit and is not a Geometrics product, but a home

built sensor. When I spoke to the engineer at Geometrics he did mention that

the

sensors were relatively easy to make.

Geometric's web page is ... http://www.geometrics.com/products.html

You might want to call them up and ask them if you can speak to one of their

engineers (there are two of them that I recall). The guy spent over 30 minutes

on the phone with me and had been working there for a number of years and

recalled of of the units they had had over the years. He could likely give you

some insight into the unit.

I picked my unit up after the boating season (Alaska's season is very short,

only

about 4 months long). I have to attach the cable to the sensor and housing and

then it should be ready for a test run this summer.
