A huge cemetery of mummies was discovered in Egypt. But the Egyptian authorities dispute the version of researchers.

Archaeologists have announced the discovery in 1700 mummies in a huge cemetery in Fag el-Gamous, Egypt. They are currently 1700, but given the size of the cemetery, there could be many more. "Mathematically, there are over a million mummies in the cemetery," Kerry Muhlstein calculated from Brigham Young University in Utah, the excavator. According to him, the bodies date from the 7th to the 1st century BC. They would not be those of members of high society, but rather poor.

Questioning History

The history of this impressive discovery was relayed in particular by the Daily Mail . The article in the British newspaper drew the attention of the Egyptian authorities who did not appreciate, as reported by the Huffington Post . Youssef Khalifa, an official of the Department of Antiquities of Egypt, is now putting into question the great story of the million mummies.

"There is indeed a site that contains many bodies, some of which are wrapped in tissue. But there are at most tens of thousands," he says. He said "only a real mummy was discovered on the Fag El Gamous site in 1980 and it is at the museum since." Besides, Muhlstein himself admitted that "mummies" found were not really. "I do not think there's been real mummification at these funerals," he told LiveScience .

So there has buried the body and wrapped in cloth, but not a million, and they are not mummies.
