If you are looking for fossils, gold or rocks/minerals, go to the Alabama Museum of Natural History located on the campus of the University of Alabama.  They have a great bookstore and other information.  We purchased several books on fossils and then spent the day hunting.  Great time.  Also, check out the Encyclopedia of Alabama for information.

Actually, I am located on the opposite side of the state.  Just need to make a road trip.  Forgot to add, visit the Janey Museum near Anniston, Alabama and speak to Tim Moon.  He is a wealth of information on rocks/minerals of Alabama.  Also, visit the Anniston Museum of Natural History for rocks/minerals/fossils from Alabama.  Does anyone know whether the Red Mountain Museum in B'ham is still open?
