Now's a bad time over there. To much lawlesness.
Only decent approach would be from the sea and that would need to be well planned and approvals sought. Metal detectors and heavy lift along with decent equipment.

Done from a sailboat you might visit several coves and covertly dive. Thus the locals might not be interested in the activity.

Hello Robin,

thank you for the excellent read! A great article!

I do remember having read in some articles on the Rommel treasure that the gold was said to have bene loaded on a truck which was dumped in the sear. Did you also notice any kind of vehicle around the boxes?

One party that has done some research into this and who has the necessary funds / gear is the Switzerland based Seabed Invest run by Mr. Keppler.

 I am a part time taxi driver. Two years ago picked up a retired British officer from the Royal Army Intelligence Corps. He told me that he had been stationed in Cairo Egypt as an enigma operator. The British had been listening in on conversations between the Germans and King Farouk of Egypt who was about to arrange a big stab in the back if the Germans paid him in gold. The deal was sabotage behind British lines and massive Arab labour support to get the German army over the Suez
canal and into the Arabian peninsular. Then to sweep into the middle eastern oil fields. This would leave Farouk in complete control of the canal and all the revenue it generated. After the battle of El-Alamain, the retreating German army completely ran out of fuel and was stranded on the Benghazi road. With the prospect of capture by the British I think that the safest place for the gold was in seventy feet of water where it could be recovered by submarine. One was sent from Italy and sunk by an American dive bomber. I hope this information is interesting. Robin Leigh.

Where was this U Boat sunk?  Enigma traffic during this time would still be in the archives.  What quantity are we talking about here?
