Go Up Go Down

My mom found this 20 years ago while walking on a beach in Rhode Island, USA.
She thinks I'm some kind of coin expert now and wants me to determine whether its
a counterfeit.  I have no idea how to do that, any expert opinions would help.

I think its a fake mainly because its so crazy looking.

I think it is Greek!  Old!

Why would anyone plant a fake coin on a beach? Great

I would have it looked at by an actual coin dealer.

It has plenty of characteristics of an authentic piece.  Appropriate wear, material (appears to be silver), etc.

It looks to be a nice piece! Could have fallen out of someones jewerly mount.

There are several things you can do:

1).   Take it to a coin or jewerly dealer to have them test it to confirm it's silver. Open your phone book, make a few calls and you could have this done today!  Most any coin or jewerly dealer that buys coins, etc. will be able to do this very quickly (they just drip a tiny bit of solution on the side of it and the color it turns confirms silver. DON'T let them do a rub / scrape test on the coin (where they scrape coin onto a stone plate and study the color of the scrape mark)...this will damage coin. and... (DON"T sell it to them if they offer to buy it!)

2).  Do an internet search on "coin shows" in your area. If there is one close by, take the coin there and you will probably get your answer.

3).  Contact this man..."Donald Zauche" (410) 857-2369 (a ancient coin dealer that I know who is knowledgable and nice) and send him pics. I'll bet he will have your answer.

Good luck and keep us informed!!!

doesn't the word COPY mean it's a replica for sale, or don't you believe that it says COPY.

Well, personally I do not think it is a fake. The question jst is what it is? We have two possibilities: Either a token, an old coin or an ancient coin. I would want to dismiss the possibility of it being an ancient Roman, Greek or Celtic Coin. It doesn't look right for those.

I can not really comment on US coins but also do not think that it is an old US coin.

So I personally think it is a token. Then again why would someone want to fake a token? I guess it is a high quality old silver token.

Or anotehr possibility would be that it is an old South American, Mexican etc. coin.

Regards,

Christian

My moms is a replica with the word COPY recessed on the front.  This is US Law.  Police If you make replicas of coins for legal sale they must be stamped with the word COPY or equivalent. This is to protect collectors from counterfeits.
The good news is theres no more bad news.  Undecided
