My friends, first off is not Tanio but Taino, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico and some other islands of the Caribbean. No Puerto Rican merchant would sell a real taino artifact because it is illegal! Anyone caught selling, buying, or trying to take a Taino artifact out of the Island would end up in jail. Bomber, your friend's statue is possibly a souvenir handmade by one the many artisans of the Island.  Teach

Heh, is it a real problem that it is illegal? If you can do something and you know that it will not be punished you do it. For example other diplomats - they can buy everything and them baggage is not checked by officers...

can't say if its fake or real but just cause its illegal to sell doesn't mean it doesn't happen....remember last year when the Tut exhibit came thru Hawass almost cancelled it cause some bigwig suit downtown had a sarcophagus in his office that he"bought" in a market in Egypt and wouldn't return it.......eventually he gave it up and the show went on..........real artifacts and fakes are bought and sold every day, legal or not......thanks for the correct spelling! Great

That's true and I don't doubt it. But oh my Goodness let me tell you I know my people very well. Anything Taino represents what we are, our culture, heritage, it is something that only belongs to us. It would be too valuable and sentimental so as to be sold.

We are capable of selling a fridge to a skimo, as we say, and ask big bucks for it. Even the least educated Puerto Rican knows that anything Taino would worth a fortune for we are talking about a culture that made it to the Caribbean by 900 BC or even earlier and were all killed by the Spaniords. So even if an indignant Puerto Rican, not proud of our ancestry dare to offer a genuine Taino artifact for sale, he would want big bucks for it, and I don't think your friend paid a fortune for what seems to be a replica. Sorry to say this, but this is my opinion and feelings about it.

I invite you and your friend to read this article:

Yes my friend you made a good point. I'm glad that Danny is a Boricua like me. Well if the artifact is genuine at least it stayed in the family.  Wink

All I know is that if I find something so precious, I won't dig it out as it should be done. That is, I would not destroy history just to earn a few bucks. But that's me and unfortunately there are people that can care less.  Undecided
