Hello Joe,

this one reads "Bishu~ Osafune Sukesada," a very wide line of sword smiths. It is probably Shinto era from around 1700.

Sincerly,

Christian

I've read some samurai swords are worth quite a bit of money.(like in the millions) Is it the maker or is it some other factor that makes them valuable?

Steve

Hello Steve,

it's the makers along with the quality of the blade. E.g. a sword of a good maker made on a bad day won't get you anywhere either. Unfortunately they don't get into the millions. Most blades are even not worth teh cost of restoration. Out of approx 5 million swords ever produced there are maybe a less than 500 hundred blades that are worth above 100k.

Regards,

Christian

Hi Christian:

The reason I ask is because during the 70's and 80's - a number of advertisements started appearing in some of the more popular magazines wanting old samurai swords.( You can still find them these days but they're not as common) Some of these ads claimed prices paid for certain swords were in the $1,000,000 range or more. Perhaps their was an overheated market back then and prices have collapsed since then.

Hello Steve,

to be honest I think these ads only tried to catch someones intrest. Prices were on their peak in the 80s but even then they were nowhere near that. There is e.g. one smith by the name of Masamune who's the most fanmous of all. His blades can maybe reach up to 2 million USD. However there are only 16 known and confirmed blades by him while there used to be about 21.000 different Japanese swords smiths. When I surf eBay I sometimes note people who put several hundred thousand dollars on their blades - which is bogus. But they might maybe also remember these adds. The most expensive blades that I have actually seen sell on eBay was no more than 15k and I have been surfing eBay for Japanese swords for over 6 years now.

Best wishes,

Christian

Did the makers of that time period ever engrave a buyers name on the swords? It seems like if you found a samurai sword with a famous or well known samurai's name on it- it might be worth much more. Much like finding a gun engraved by Jesse James, Wyatt Earp or some other well known outlaw or sheriff here in the states.
