Actually, they were strictly ceremonial.  The one on the left is representative of the double sun symbol (said to be seen by the shamans in visions). The eccentric to the left represents a crocodile and may be symbolic of another Mayan City State, such as Lamanai (Mayan for "submerged crocodile).  The piece in the middle is painted with cinnabar and is symbolic of "the kill."

Yea, ok.

They sure work good as fish Hooks!  Try them, I have!

You can make them from Thorn bushes too.

That took a lot of skill to make. I have seen someone making arrow heads and that is an art. Something like the double sun had to take a true pro. Some thing like the fish hooks which have the shape of modern fish hooks blow me away. Years of working stone to get to that point.

Actually they was skilled enough to make them in a few minutes or hours.

Them old boys weren't as numb as we think they were.

Just think about all we have found.

That's what we found.

How many did they make?

I have a place not far from here that there are core stones that must have produced thousands if not more point, Knifes and stuff.

There are flake piles a foot deep in some places.

You can find workable points they just chucked aside not being good enough for who ever was making them.

I don't think!  I know the Archies under estimated the skill of these folks.

Mayan eccentrics are some of the most intricately flaked items in the ancient world.  Like most native American systems, they would work the chert in one area, sending out a pre-form, and complete it somewhere else.  The site of Colha, Belize is very large, with debitage piles several feet thick throughout a 1 mile square area.  I have found spalls as big as my forearm and pre-forms as long as 18" long.  This was a preliminary manufacturing area with many of the points finalized at sites such as Altun Ha and Lamanai.  Interesting stuff.  Attached is a photo of some of the eccentrics that they made at Colha.
