Sringfrenzy, I found a No 12 NEW CLUB like yours except it has the Star Primer like the No 10 that shaw/ca shows on his web site. I was looking for something that would date the older finds at the site but no old coins yet. In some ways the head stamp might be better than a coin because you might expect the shell to be used within a year or two of its manufacture.

Wow, guess what? I just found a U M C new club shot shell head. Needs cleaning but is completely readable. I would like some feedback as I am new here.

As I understand it Union Metallic Co. operated from 1867 to 1911 as a separate company. that was when the New Club was made. , They are almost as good as coins to date the ground you are working in. Unlike coins, they most likely landed on the ground within a few years of their manufacture. they would make nice decorative buttons if cut off , polished pierced through the cap. Happy hunting.

Congrats on your U.M.C. shell find.  I don't think I'd do much as far as cleaning it though.  Maybe a little soap and water.

I was detecting on my Great Grandfathers home site in White Oak, Mo last week. He was a doctor and moved from TN to MO in the late 1890's. I found the U.M.C. New Club 12 gauge brass cap about 6 inches down. I know he was an avid outdoorsman. I also found a silver conchos in the same area. The iron trash was heavy as it was farm land around the area. He had a large barn on the home site also according to my Dad.

Cool find! UMC was bought by Remington not long after their foundation, and at one point owned the tallest building in Connecticut – a shot cooling tower. I believe it's been some time since they've made shotshells.
