That would probably be something the market would have to sort out at auction.  Considering a heavily used, yolk, from an 1878 Gatling gun is listed for $10,000.00 on

Topcat- Did you seriously find a 1870 Gatling still packed in cosmoline? That thing if mint, would be worth more per oz than gold. Shocked

No guys I have not...and like they say, a big find, you sure as hell wouldn't post it. No offense. I was just researching something where 6 or 7 were lost in an old Indian attack and supposedly never recovered. It involves a couple of current ranches, a couple of locales, permission, the usual searching, etc.

The right item at the right time at a premium auction can send anything through the roof and make purchase history. I was just curious on a ballpark worth for something like that since it is not a regularly traded firearm.

                 Im sorry I wasnt here to answer your question. However you have me on the edge of my seat!!!! This is one of my favorite weapons! you say this weapon is packed in cosmoline? Please tell me you didnt sell it for 10 grand.
there are many things to consider on this weapon, who made it and what is the cal. and serial number. If you dont mind me asking where the heck did you find this? This can be considered a HOLY GRAIL in the firearms world. Hold on to your seat and take you heart meds! these guns depending on various circumstances can be worth 100,000.00 or more! I would love to hear more about this weapon and see some pictures if possible. If you have any further questions
just ask away or send me a pm. And just for further information ATF does not consider this weapon a Machine Gun and is legal to own. However depending on the state you live in they can be condidered ILLEGAL. By the state. Am looking forward to hearing more about this teriffic find Best Wishes....Rob ,,( PS is this for sale LOL )

Several (15?) years ago someone listed one for sale in the Shotgun News. If my memory serves me, I believe it was an 1873 Colt gun. The asking price was 250,000.00 and it was supposedly new in the original crate.
A couple months later the news was that the seller was arrested as the thing was stolen from a private collection and is one of only 2-3 known to exist in their original packing.
Hard to move something as rare as this......
Stuff does disappear, though and can be dug up decades later. The serial numbers generally create a trail.
I live in Minnesota not too far from Stillwater, where the Stllwater Territiorial prison (now apartment buildings) once held the Younger Brothers (Cole, Bob and Jim).
This prison originally had two (2) Gatling guns set up at the corners of the walls. Noasays, a lot of people wonder what happened to those guns.....they just sorta disappeared and nobody has a clue.
Someone owns them somewhere but my guess is that they were misappropriated and the owners will never come forward.......
