While watching the news last week this story was on the local news. apparently a and unknown person turned in a AK-47 to the Lakewood Washington Police Dept. This gun was chrome plated with an Ivory Stock with the etching of Sadam Hussein
looking back at You as You looked down the sights. The weapon arording to the US Army had been demiliterized. and was a collectors piece. And was more that liklely brought back legally. But now for the twist! The goverment has the weapon back! and claims they have no idea how or where it came into someone elses hands. I sincerly hope that the person whp turned this in is wealthy. Because he sure could have been well off by selling this piece to a licenced collector. this type of weapon in question is a presentation piece. and would bring a hefty price at auction! The Army says an assault rifle that apparently originated in Iraq, was brought to Fort Lewis and then later removed from the local post was not a functioning weapon.
The Army?s Criminal Investigation Command is officially still investigating the chrome-plated, AK-47 assault rifle, bearing Saddam Hussein?s likeness, that was turned in to Lakewood police in early December.
Investigators consider the weapon ?demilitarized,? meaning someone welded a metal slug into the barrel and removed the firing mechanism.
The Army investigated and determined it was appropriately processed as a ?military museum artifact,? Fort Lewis spokesman Joe Kubistek said Monday.
?How it got off post is still under investigation,? he said.
Lakewood police Lt. Heidi Hoffman said a soldier turned in the weapon, which has a white-colored stock, to the department Dec. 4. The soldier wanted police to ?take custody and destroy it,? Hoffman said Monday.
Normally, the department would direct that such a weapon be turned into military police, but a front-desk person mistakenly accepted it, she said. After police examined the gun, they gave it to the Army on Dec. 8.
