Ran across another older shotgun shell head again today. This one is a U.M.C. NEW CLUB 12GA shell. Recovered from around7" from an area that I have pulled coins that date back as far as 1887.

From what I've been able to find, U.M.C. known as the Union Metallic Cartridge Company was founded in 1867 by Marcellus Hartley in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They manufactured a variety of shells up until either 1902 or 1911 depending on what information you go by at which time the company was merged with Remington.

If I've missed anything on the info please feel free to add to it.

I like to use that database and have been looking forward to the data cd they've got coming out soon. Quite a bit of info on that page.

Neat find--don't know if things like that hold much value? But it is neat to see anyhow. I've found shells out in wooded areas on many of my detecting searches--I even found an old Pin fire type shotgun shell on a lot where the workers were clearing lot and had torn down old house. Those Pin fire type shells are worth something-I'm not sure how much, though?

It is interesting to find those shells. I like to find the story behind them as well as an approximate date of manufacture for that line of shell. Yeah it's also interesting to know if they have any sort of value even if it is small but the biggest value to me is that I have been using these types of finds to help date activity in certain areas. Although it may not be concrete for evidence it does stand to reason that to find them someone had to fire them. It has also taught me a lot about shell companies as of late as well.

I have found the same type of shell, and a few other shells that I would like to identify. It is quite interesting, found mine on and 100+ year farm ground.

About 10 years ago pinfire weapons were cheap and most dealers couldnt give them away, However over the last 5 or so years the prices have skyrocketed, the same goes with the live ammo and spent shell casings take a llok at some of the gun auction sites on the web, Gunbroker.com is one of the biggest and you can look up ammo as well as antique arms. I wouldsay about 45 percent are gun dealers and about 40 percent collecters etc etc. but it will give you an idea how much things go for.I hope this helps somewhat,As Always Best Wishes....Rob

The site has proven to be quite helpful in the past and I've been checking back fairly often trying to keep an eye on updates. Thanks for mentioning the gunbroker site. I'll have to check that one out...can't recall if I've been to that site before or not.
