while in afghanistan

(1/1)

toleary34:
i did three tours in iraq with the Marines, and then volunteered to go to Afghanistan with the army for a year, and while i was over there i started my own little collection of antique soviet arms from when they invaded and occupied Afghanistan in the late seventy's i believe it was.  I had about a total of four weapons when i left three were small extremely rusted pistols and one was a sub machine gun looking weapon that resembled a tommy gun in style, and the ammunition was supplied from a drum under the front hand guard.  the barrel had the protective metal around it with the air cooling vents, and this was not a crew served weapon that used a bipod, it was purely a shoulder fired, air cooled weapon.

I was told from a buddy that collects firearms that the year of the weapon was 1945.  this thing was pretty rusted, however the bolt moved freely and i tried to clean it up.  i was wondering if anyone knew the name of this weapon or had apicture of it.  i had to leave the four weapons over there because of their firing capabilities, you can only bring back smoothe bore weapons made before a certain period of time.  i bought a couple of old looking flint lock pistols over there, but i think that they were made by combing old as well as new parts, but hey they're a better souvenir to bring back than a bullet in my keester, i'll post pictures of those as soon as i get a chance, however like i said i'f love to learn about that particular machine gun if anyone knows any more on it.

Yep. Thought it was a ppsh41 you were talking about. I saw several of them over there. Brought home some of the pistols like you are talking about too, as well as several of the Endfields and Martini Henrys. Used to love to go to the bazaar and see the tables piled high with weapons. That and the excitement are the only thing I miss over there. Also brought back a nice sword with engraving on the blade. Glad you made it home in one piece.

Jocelyn S.:
If you need any close-up pic of any particular angle, just ask. Inside or outside. I'm a collector of WWII SMGs and own one. The drum held 71 rounds and the "banana" mag held 35.

From the 70's, the sidearm that would praobably be used, would be a Makarov handgun. But to go with the same period as the PPSh41, it would be a Tokarev TT-33 (or the Chinese copy the Norinco Type 54) Again, if you need pics, ask and I'll be glad to help!
