I was in Harbor Freight last week and they had one rated for 80 pounds. I picked one off the shelf and stuck it on a circular saw table accross the aisle Grin .......... and took off!

As a New member, I saw a person with a magnetic broom in a parking lot. Sweeping the beach might become an idea

As a kid, I used to toss a magnet rated @ pulling 150lb tied to 3/8" nylon rope off the piers on the waterfront in Seattle. Pulled up 1,000s of fish hooks and misc hardware.

Best finds with it were: A nearly brand new Barlow pocket knife, brushed stainless steel imitation Zippo lighter (pulled it apart, dried it out, added new flint & fluid and it worked fine), a Craftsman #2 phillips screwdriver. Being around 11 years old at the time, these items were pure treasure!

I haven't tossed a magnet in years. Now, 20 years later, I'm itching to hit Harbor Freight and try it again. Thanks for the memory.

Thank you Bomber.  I can't wait to go magnet fishing.  I hope to catch something exciting.

Years ago there was an ad for plans for an electromagnet that would attract gold. Don't know how it worked, but from what I have read it was alternating current (you could modify it for field/water use) probably created an induction field in the gold so it produced it's own magnetic field. Gold is slightly magnetic. Some guy told me he knew a guy that had some device that he used to pick up gold filings in his shop. Now solid gold is a different matter and it might be much more difficult, I don't know. So if you could use one on a gold producing stream, you would probably need a conventional magnet to first pull out the black sand. The question would be would the water current be too strong and wash the gold away from the magnet? This might work to catch micron gold.

Several years ago I had a guy show me an electromagnet that did pick up a gold ring but required 220  volts to operate. The guy had a rep as a semi conman so I did not get involved with him. Thinking now I should have paid more attention.

Ok, mate, here's the real deal. Gold itself is not magnetic but it can be weakly magnetized for a few milliseconds. Thus, an electromagnetic field that alternates between north and south poles generated by an AC field current can magnetize gold for a tiny fraction of time. Since the field shifts from north to south very rapidly at 50 or 60 times per second (depending on where you are getting your power) the electromagnet will attract the gold which has a residual magnetism of the opposite polarity for just a fraction of a second. Then, it gets the new polarity and as the field switches yet again, it attracts yet again. It's a weak attraction but a trick of physics. Unfortunately, it's not something you can use in the field.

Do you realize how many dreams you have just shattered?   All those folks who have been looking for gem detectors were getting all excited about building their very own gold magnets ---  no more panning and sluicing and digging and .......
