As previously stated, the waters edge or where the edge of the water reaches.  The water washes up items on the beach from the sea/ocean.

if one is hunting a saltwater beach time it so one goes there about 1 hour before low tide so that you get the "bottom" or lowtide to hunt -- the shallows at low tide will be about where waist deep was during the higher tide times -- and will give you the maximum huntible area to try from. --- the down tide and the bottom and first say 1/2 hour up tide -- gives you a nice bit of prime hunting time.

Go Up Go Down

I have hunted the water off and on since 1967. I have found in fresh water lakes and ponds that waist deep was the best. I have found my best salt water beach ring on the dry sand and it was up far on the beach, not near the water, and the largest percent of rings found were in the water at knee to waist deep. I have noticed that the largest percent of coins comes at low tide or outgoing and near low tide, near the waters edge. But depending where you are, I have found my oldest coins in salt water at extreme low tides and way out at waist deep, but unfortunately the salt really hurt them and after exposure and taking the oxidation off, they fall apart. These are (dime size or smaller) silver coins that have been in the water for over 70 years. I sometimes dig Mercury dimes that are thin almost unrecognizable. What is noticeable, is that I have also found fairly modern coins way out from shore in waist deep water, showing that they have washed out, not in. Storms can either bring stuff in or take it out, no set rule to it. In most cases it is just luck that really matters, it can't be found if it isn't there.

Potentially you can find good stuff just about anywhere on the beach. So, while its true that hunting in tidal waters, low tide probably gives you more choices of how far "in" to hunt...I've had good luck on high tide as well as low. What I do is, do a little bit of dry sand first...this helps me with the settings on my machine. If I'm enjoying the dry sand then why bother getting wet. If I get there at low tide great, but If i don't-who cares! Not me. My advice is study the beach a little. Is there any vending activities? or activities where people are reaching into their pockets. That's how some rings come off. Volley ball courts are great. Ive had best luck where most people congregate to...close to the lifeguard stands for example. The beaches i hunt, the dry sand tends to give up more variety than the surf but also more trash. Aluminum foil is rampant, Pull tabs and juicy juice on the dry. On the surf is mainly bobby pins but a lot cleaner than the dry sand.  In the water I never go deeper than waist deep my best results have been knee deep in the surf. I try to follow a line parallel to the water line. I determine this line based on where I find my first few coins then I just follow it. One last thing, I prefer a PI machine and dig every hit in the surf and a discriminating machine on dry sand but that's just the way I do it. So just go out and hunt, have a good time and good luck!
