First you have to get a hunting license for the type of coin you are after. A quarter license won't do for dimes and . . .

OW! Ouch! Ok. I'll stop. (Metal_Inspector - the forum moderator - was hitting me.) I hate it when he does that.

The best thing to do as a beginner is to hunt the area on dry sand where most people hang out on the weekend or during their beach visit. I find that they mostly park themselves on the highest point that is still as close to the water as possible. That way they can watch their kids, the girls in bathing suits or the guys, whichever is the beach goer's favorite. Look for blanket marks in the sand, footprint tracks to and from the parking lot and other signs of human occupation. Search those areas in the all metal mode and dig every target. You'll find good and bad stuff but it's always rewarding.

When you find your first valuable item, you won't want to go home. Enjoy.

You lucky devil, you! You really ought to get an underwater machine. I used one on Waikiki 4 years ago and found dozens of rings and other jewelry. Paid for our hotel suite for the week with just a couple of hours around dawn each day.
