Go Up Go Down

Looking for a fresh water detector . Will be going to swimming holes, River, Canal, lakes, ponds, Creeks.Thinking of getting a BHID 300.

 My questions
What is the average depth of under water detectors or just the bhid300.I bought a land detector that would get me 6-10 inches depth easily.Found somethings only a few inches in the ground , deepest find is at 13inches.Am very happy with this detector.
I dont think a PI machine is right for me at this time , do to the areas I would be going to are some what trashy, but I could be wrong let me know.
Looking for one with discrimination also.
I guess I should say, If you  were going to buy your best friend an underwater detector, which one would it be and why. Thanks

If I was buying my best friend a detector and money was not an issue, I would buy them an Excalibur. I would search high and low to see if I could find a brand new old stock Excal 800 from one of the dealers. If I couldn't locate one than I would get an Excal 2 with the 8" coil. The only reason I would try to find the older model is because I have heard of a few issues with the new model and would not like spending my time sending the unit back for repairs, but that's just me. I live in Canada so returning things to the states is a hassel,ie; duties, customs, delivery times, etc. Minelab probably has addressed the issues with this machine by now so you probably dont have to worry. Now, lets talk about the Excal. In all metal mode, this machine will go almost as deep as a PI machine. In discriminate mode, it has iron mask, auto ground balance, tone ID, auto sensitivity, etc. Once you use the machine for a while and get used to it, you can experiment with the different settings that it offers. Using the all metal mode full time will open up previously hunted areas all over again. I find it to be a very stable machine however it is a slow sweep speed machine. If you are used to using another brand, you will notice that you must slow your sweep speed in comparison. I believe this has to do with the BBS system that the Excal uses. It takes time to analyse the multi frequencies that the machine is receiving back to the processor, so I'm told. Anyway, I have used the Tiger Shark, 1280, Stingray, Surf PI Pro, Sea Hunter Mark 2, and of course the Excal. For fresh water use, I choose the Excal. I have not used the BHID or 300 yet althoough I just picked up a BHID this week, but cant comment on it because I've yet to try it. I did a backyard test with it and find the tone ID/led system to be very accurate on the items I tested. I could tell between white gold, 10k, 14k, and 18k. Just my opinions, hope it is of some help.....Pete

a lot depends on your budget, but for fresh water i would go for a tesoro tiger shark, but if you intend hitting salt water as well get the excal. i only use PI's on my salt water beachs but thats just personal preferance

My budget is wide open. I will not be buying anything until springtime, March, April 2010. Now I just have to come up with the right words to let my wife know that my name is on the tax refund also, I got a couple of months to work on that.

I haven't had any problems with my Excal II 1000 Pete and haven't heard of anybody else having any. I have been using it all season and it is working great. You are right, you do have to swing it slower.
