Stonebreaker you are so lucky because you are living close to one of the most interesting spots on the West Coast of the USA . I am speaking about the Nehalem river wreck in Oregon . A few years back chunks of stuff were found buried in the sand about 200 meters away from the mouth of that river .  They were chunks of bees wax . Inscriptions on them spelled out  J.H.S. which means as much as  ,, Jesus Hominum Salvador ,, indicating that this was property of the Catholic Church . The date on the wax was around 1679 . On the Nehalem Spit they also found pieces of Teak-wood . This was an indication of a possible Spanish wreck comming from Manila . However nobody ever found that ship . Now what is my idea about this wreck ? If you look at the coast of Oregon  just above Nehalem you will see that the coast line bends toward the West . The Spanish ships followed the coastline when sailing to Acapulco ( Mexico ) . The reaso for this was because there were no maps showing the sailors where they were at a certain moment . Only by following the coast line they could about guess where they were .  Coming from the North following the current that flows there ( from North toward the South ) they would suddenly loose the coastline  ( where the coast north of Nehalem turns toward the East ) . This is a nasty place to be in , certainly when the weather was a little foggy .  There are some rock ledges in that area . If a ship would hit one of these rocks she certainly would flounder . This is what I think happened . But how come the wax and the timbers were found at Nehalem ? Simple . The heavy stuff would sink to the bottom  ( ballast stones and cargo ) while the lighter bees-wax and the wooden superstruckture would stay afloat and be carried away by yhr current ( as I said flowing from North toward the South ) . When this lighter stuff was gripped by the current of the Nehalem river it was first carried further from shore . taking in consideration that the water flowing out of the river drags coastal water with it , which will flow back in a circle  ( left ) toward the coast again the flotsam ended up to the South of the river on the spit . Here it was covered up by sand ( as the river deposited the sand from the river toward the left ) . So I asked myself again , why could nobody find the wreck ? Well simply because they were looking in the wrong spot. Anybody willing to investigate the area toward the North of Nehalem ( in the area where the rocks are ) will certainly find the remains of our Spanish Gallleon together with the gold , porcelain and cannon .   Regards   Cornelius

Great research Cornelius, your reasoning makes good sense. Definitively plenty of rocks off the coast.

stonebreaker, good finds anyway. Anyplace where the waves hit the beach you will have artifact enrichment in lines or zones along the breaker point. You can hunt this at very low tides or with a waterproof detector. You can wade out to your arm pits and make recoveries with the aid of a long handled scoop with small holes in it. Of coarse a beach with a long history of human activity is best, but you never know what you will find no matter where you go. A good time to go is after a storm at the next low tide.

Hello All
Am trying to research this wreck to see what I can find out, It may make a very interesting summer project for this year. I want to get into shipwrecks, However due to a medical condition Its advisable that I do not dive! so I will have to find a diver for a few of the endevors I wish to undertake. ( But Im still working on that!) Best Wishes ,,,,Rob

Take in consideration what I wrote above . If you want to find this wreck don't look where the wax came ashore !!!!   Cornelius

Hi Cornelius,
Am taking Your advise on the matter of where to look, after some brief research
last evening I found that 2 years ago a local Archeologist was trying to locate the wreck, but I have not found anything further on his activity on the search, Just to bring you up to speed my
girlfriend knows the area well,in fact its one of her favorite places to get away from it all! ( where the rocks are that is) so we are going to do some further research to see what we can come up with...Best Wishes ....Rob
