Go Up Go Down

After my wife and son went to bed, I drove the hour up to this lovely beach.  I couldn't relly see the beach, it was nearly pitch dark, but the stars were amazingly bright and the sound of the rolling tropical surf was refreshing.

Metal detecting here in Japan is a vere very rare hobby.  I have never seen another MD'er here in Japan, and if it weren't for the few others posting on this forum, I would have believed that I was the only one.  Thus, if I go hunting during the day I attract a lot of attention.  Once, when I was intently digging up a deeply burried coin, I was startled by a round of applause as I pulled up the 500 yen coin.  I hadn't noticed, but while I was digging a crowd of about 20 tourists had lined up behind me to see what I was doing.  Wearing the headphones protects me from the talkative people, but it still grows tiresome to have people follow me up and down the beaches.

So I started hunting these beaches at night.  Japan is relatively a safe country, and I have never felt threatened here.  I have never felt unsafe when hunting here at night.  I doubt I would ever try night beach hunting anywhere, but here in Japan.

So last night I had the whole beach to myself except for the sand crabs and the huge fruit bats.  I didn't find any gold but I found nearly $40 in Japanese clad.  The most I have ever found at one beach.  It was so much fun to scoop up coin after coin.  The newer 500 yen coins register the same as a gold ring on my machine, so it was always exciting when I found one of them.

So far I have stuck with the dry or slightly wet sand.  I haven't ventured into the water yet, but as the days grow hotter and hotter herar, the water is starting to look more inviting.  Also I imagine I will find more gold rings if I ...take the plunge.... Can any one recomend a good submersible metal detector?  I don't have a diver's license, but I am an accomplished snorkeler.  Most of the time however, I think I will stay in the shalower waters.

Thanks and stay Well,

Dr. Ron Dutcher

Ron,
Today on a news show I watched a video segment detailing the activities of an American couple out hunting on a well populated beach. The news had a short interview with the man and everyone, both in the studio and on the beach, was quite interested in what he was finding. Now, with Japanese being seriously into the group thing, it wouldn't surprise me at all if local MDing clubs (consisting of embers in their 50's, 60's, and 70's) begin to form administered by the appropriate club officials who would then organize giant beach bashing tours throughout the country. Naturally, members will wear club kit and be outfitted with nothing but the best detectors, sand scoops, and accessories. Heck....Maybe I should start a MD'ing outfitting business for the impending boom. Grin Grin

Meanwhile, nice to hear you are out enjoying the 'good ole days'.

Ian

Wow Ian... You really know the Japanese Well.  A few years back I joined a Japanese Photography club.  As you would imagine... very militaristic oginization.  Most members in their 50's, 60's and 70's.... Every member wearing the club shirts, and not one member carrying less than $15,000 worth of photography gear.

 Detecting
Hey Bomber,  I checked out that Minelab detector.  It looks to be just what I need.  I spent about $500 on may Garrett GTI 1500, and in the first month I have found almost $100.  Perhaps after I pay off my firs machine, then I will get the Minelab...or if the beaches get so hot that I can't dig in the sand without burning my fingers....

Thanks for the suggestion.

Remember, its not how good you do the hobby but how good you look doing the hobby.....

As for hot sand, night time hunts during the tropical summers are devine!

Please do your research before you metal detect in Japan...

Here are some resources to help you out in doing so:

Of particular importance:

CHAPTER IV Buried Cultural Property (Article 57 - Article 68)

CHAPTER V Historic Sites, Places of Scenic Beauty and/or Natural Monuments

CHAPTER VII Penal Provisions
(Criminal Penalties)
