PopCap, I'm a desert rat, so I don't consider myself qualified to answer your question since I only get to beach hunt a couple of times a year.   However, we do have a lot of members here who do have experience.   They've posted a few tips on recovery on this board, but I'm pretty sure they are buried now.   If I remember the tips correctly (and this way does work for me when I get the chance to try it):
1)  pinpoint the target with your detector as you would on land (x the spot to locate where the target is )
2)  set your coil down on the target spot
3)  set the mouth of your scoop down immediately behind the coil
4)  lift the coil and step on the scoop as you would on a garden shovel, bringing the basket forward and under where the detector coil was
5)  surface and drain the scoop.
6)  repeat 1-6 if necessary.
