Go Up Go Down

Very encouraging video for people like me who are thinking of getting started in the pastime of detecting. I will be retiring in a year and I think this would be a perfect way to get me out there and get in some traveling in my beautiful country of Canada.

If I was able to find enough of value to at least finance my travels and perhaps supplement my pension income, that would be all the better, but I have do disillusions about this, as I realize that not everyone is successful at metal detecting.

There is much to learn. For instance, what is the best metal detector to purchase that is all purpose, and good enough that I will not have to upgrade in a year or two. (Beach, surf--waterproof, ghost towns, etc.).

However, I do have a question about all the great finds you show in your video. As a matter of fact, about all the finds I see in videos from around the world.

In a monetary sense, piles of old corroded pennies or other coins are not really worth anything.

My question is more about silver and gold and valuable, rare coins.

In fact who is it that will buy these things?

Obviously they will not be paying face value.

For instance, if you have one pound of gold at today's current price of $1,557.20 per ounce that would compute to $24,915.52.

Is the gold you discovered considered "junk gold?" And if so, how does that alter the value? I suppose if an Australian found a two pound gold nugget, that would be more like face value as it is solid gold.

Also, many of the rings have diamonds in them. That may make them even more valuable. Would you be selling those individually--and again--who would buy them? How do you go about getting fair appraisals?

The same goes for silver. At the time of this writing the price is  $28.63 per ounce. So four pounds worth is $1,832.32. I suppose if it were pure silver only with no other metals mixed in.

If you found a rare coin that was in good shape and was valued at $2000 for example, who would buy it? Again, how would you get a fair appraisal?

These are all questions I have wondered about as I see these piles of old, dirty coins, gold, silver, and diamond rings, and gold chains from metal detector finds from around the world and any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your excellent video, and I hope you reach your goal of five pounds of gold in one year.

I don’t sell my finds but I usually check there “metal value” against the Perth’s mint scrap gold price.
They update it daily.
The scrap gold prices are at very end of the page.
