Over in Athens glyfada beach Greece,   I was finding a few rings and two or Three Chains a day just Eyeballs and Snorkle.

Imagine what I would have found with a Cheapo Aquatic detector.    Yep!   Detectors were a 10 Year thing.  Didn't much like that Idea!

90% was Sterling Silver but a few was gold.

The Tourist from Scandinavia, UK, Ireland , Germany would buy that stuff up it was as good deal.

They would loose it the same day or that week.

God, I had a Detector Stashed in the Closet and could not take it out.

I wrote  , LOL!  No Internet back then, Bill Layr and he sent me a schematic for what is like the British Sands Banks .

Said Have Fun and Prosper My Son!

I was trying to build it in a Hideable Wand when all hell broke Loose with Libya!

Actually, you could have. The restrictions and bans are only for antiquity sites, not for beaches. You were misinformed back then.

Wrong!     Just owning one in hand would be a Problem back then.

Your talking about a Country that would send Women conviction of drug crimes to the state Run Whore Houses.

They could do 20 years of regulare time or 5 years working in the House.

Been There Seen That Got That T shirt.

Things were going on back in the 80's you never heard about.

Killing Air Crews, Blowing up the Hellenicon Air Base, piles of stuff.

Unless you was there you would not know.

Homefire, I was there in 1971 (Thessaloniki) and in 1974, 1980, 1982, 1990 (Athens) and used my detector without being molested at all. I had lots of chats with officials while there. Never a problem. I have also been exchanging conversation right here on this forum with another guy from Greece who says the same thing. He can't figure out why you had problems.

Do you look sneaky or something?

Well fact is I did.      No one had a detector..    It was a NO NO!   Even the Locals I talked to wanted one but could not have one.

Base Leason Said No!   Local Police said NO!   That was enough for me to leave it locked up.

I sure could have had a Time with a PI there.
