Go Up Go Down

Anyone know how to really use this thing?  I bought it for the clear shallow water of the Florida coast where I live as well as to hit the dry sand and shoreline.  So far I have only had it on the dry sand beach.  The problem is that it picks up everything!  Every two feet it goes off, literally. It has a discrete setting, which I use, but still finds nails, tabs, etc. Anyone know the best settings or is it just the wrong detector for the beach??

Take a gold ring and put it on discrete mode, and up the discrimination between 7-8 (almost full on) and check the depth you can still find the ring (adjust the depth by turning down discrimination -- but at that general range it will almost eliminate all trash and still find gold), and run a pop top tang under the coil at that depth to confirm it eliminated the trash.  If you want max depth, use it in standard mode (no discrimination, no discrete mode, etc.).

Much if not most of the below found with the SeaHunter (other detector was Fisher Impulse):

I've been using the various Sea Hunters for almost 30 years -- they are reliable beepers for sure, but digging a lot of targets goes with the territory.

If you want detailed info on the XL-500 (diving test, etc) go here:

Type in Garrett XL-500 in the search and hit "search."  Not trying to hijack the forum, but there's to many threads on that machine over the years to post all the info for you.

Good luck and enjoy your XL-500 -- a very good unit.

Thanks so much for the reply and detailed information. One other question I have is how to set the threshold.  I ran into a guy at the beach this morning and he told me he sets his so he can hear a luight steady hum.  I have been turning it down so there is no hum.  Can you tell me the best way please?  Found a few fish hooks, bolts, tabs and toys today.

For maximum detection, set it with a light hum.
