Go Up Go Down

Hello to all who read! Thank you in advance to all who post here. Ive been detecting since I was a kid but, only recently have I found myself near a beach. The Military has sent me to Okinawa Japan. Ive come equipped with my Minelab Explorer SE, various SEF coils and a big long handle scoop lol. Metal-detecting isnt very popular here so many of the beaches are untouched. The Okinawan People are very curious about the hobby, I do my best to tell them what Im doing through my broken Japanese. Ive read and own Andy's book on the explorer & E-track models as well as a few on beach hunting specifically. My question is does anyone else hunt beaches with an SE? Do you find gold with it. Ive found tons of clad and a good bit of silver but no gold. Im thinking of purcasing an Excalibur II, Good Idea? I understand that I might be searching in the wrong places but I haven't quite figured out storm patterns, or how tides affect target depth. I really don't want to let such a unique opportunity pass with out attacking it with my best shot. Help if You can, Thanx

Okinowa beaches!!!!!!!  Shocked    Aren't those beaches full of things that may go bang if you hit them with your spade?

I'm thinking those beaches would be loaded with un-exploded ordanance and scrap metal , probably untouched and a lot of fun to explore , just gotta be careful . cheers Mick

Ha ha ha, Fortunately 70+ years of coastal erosion and  Grade A EOD work have all but eliminated this threat on the beaches. The surrounding forest is another matter all together. My Military work has led to me becoming very familiar with the boom boom and I think the old Clay Picric- acid grenades are a bigger threat but, luckily my Explorer SE doesn't have a clay setting Undecided.  Anywho I went out today and found a hand full of yen (Japanese clad), A woman's medallion ,and an old costume ring. Nothing to scream about i know but whats great about Okinawa is that the face value of coins ranges from about $1.20 to over $6.00 U.S.!! so clad isn't just clad. Today's  hunt yielded 2727 yen, that's $34.24 in just a few pieces. A big storm had just rolled through and threw a ton of sand on to the beach so alot of the good stuff had been covered up but that just leves more for next time I suppose. Well till next time, Good Huntin!

Nice going there. I wonder if you will turn up any personal items lost by US troops who landed on Okinawa? I wouldn't bet on all ordnance having been removed; still take great care with that spade. My UK beach in Wales was demined in 1945, but I still keep in mind that they may have missed one item so I closely inpect larger targets before lifting them. I look forward to seeing your future finds.

Thanks again Chris for the good safety advice. The majority of the tourist beaches here are man made and relatively new so I probably wont find many personal artifacts. The odd bullet shows up here and there  Wink but I would absolutely loose it if I found a bayonet.  Oh yea and as far as really big stuff goes, I don't even bother with an attempt. Once I came across a deep signal and a rough trace with the SE outlined something about 10X36. Digging down, it dawned on me that this could potentially be my last find Shocked. Soon after, I made contact with what ever it was and politely re-covered it and left it alone. All I know is that it was old, rusty, cylindrical and wasn't worth investigating further.

Hi,

Sounds like you are doing ok here in Oki.

Have you hit any of the northern beaches?  I have only hit the ones on the center...around Yomitan, Chatan, Ginowan and the east side.

If you are looking to go in and know of some caves, I would like to meet up and go.  I don't know where any good caves are at to go.

Hi there, Japan Hunter. I hadn't given caves much thought. Ive mainly been sticking to the beaches and the on Base parks due to my lack of familiarization with Japanese law. The recent conflicts involving U.S. forces have put alot of people on edge. Id definitely give it a shot though. Next time you plan to go out detecting let me know. Ill see if I can come with.

Go Up Go Down

I recently was watching some films on the history of WW2 in the Pacific (Crusade in The Pacific series). Seems very often they would just seal the caves shut with whoever was in them, rather than try to go in after them. They sealed most, by just bulldozing them shut with dirt or sand. So I guess that would make some sealed caves very dangerous, as they would have whatever equipment was with the men, still in them. Grenades and other explosives would be the biggest concern, but also these would be considered grave sites, so it likely would be illegal. Some caves that would have been left open probably would be your best bet, but don't forget that the ravages of time on a grenade pin rusting away would make just moving one, a possible last move you would ever make. Bullets would be no problem, but artillery shells could also be bad news. I saw a tv show about a year ago, where an islander was giving tours of some Pacific island caves and he showed loads of amunition in the caves and of course he wouldn't touch it. Just be very careful if you do it.
