I've read various comments re: headphones. Most say buy the best that you can afford. However, I would like to get opinions of those who are VERY experience in MD'ing. When I bought headphones, I didn't buy the cheapest nor the most expensive (not necessarily the guage to use when buying headphones) but rather the 'middle of the road' from a major MD mfg.  They seem to work fine however, I never used the high priced ones. Could some experienced detectorists tell me if the 'top quality' ones really will provide a major impact for those of us who are still not 'experts'?  While I understand they may be better, I am concerned that for those of us who are  not experts, it may be overkill at our level of experience.  I look forward to hearing from you all.  (if I need better headphones, I can ask Santy Claus for a set).

For me I went cheap. The main thing I looked for was volume control. Can't remember the brand but the ones I got have a good sound, no static, and I can easily tell the difference in the tones.

BTW I'm jealous the stuff ya'll pull from the ground in Europe.  Cool  Being in an area that has a short history, seeing the things you find.  Kiss

To me its the comfort that the higher priced head phones give, the cups are usually bigger and don't hurt the ear after several hours of wearing them, i like the gray ghost the best with the replacement cords. As far as hearing better i don't think there is a difference unless you are comparing the very cheap to the better units.

Thanks Ghola,

I got the mid priced headphones from Whites and they have volume control on each ear separately and seem to work fine.

Yes, I am having fun getting all the stuff. I tried to update the other day but had problems with attaching the photo. The unusual thing was an aluminum 1921 5 franc coin with scalloped edges. I had never seen one before and didn't know if it was a token or a coin..The history on the web said that in 1921 and thereabouts, France was in a depression (predating the US depression) and had to mint 'emergency money'.. This was part of the emergency money.  I also found a musket ball and another coin in the 1700's (neither coin was in very good shape but at least the aluminum one was much easier to read.. Also, the aluminum money had Provencale Chambre de Commerce stamped on it which seemed very unusual. Coloma Gold

Thanks Dinger 45..

I agree the price does buy comfort and that I may get some pricier ones in the future. However, the ones I have now are suitable for my present needs. Once I do "all day" searches, perhaps Santa Claus will get me a pair of the really good ones. Coloma Gold

Coloma, I've been detecting since the early '70s and I've always gone for the mid-range to cheaper headphones and like Ghola, I always looked for volume controls and stereo phones.  Although, now that my hearing is shot and the cheaper headphones hurt my ears after a couple of hours, I'm thinking about going for comfort!  Good luck with Santa!   Detecting

Thanks ArfieBoy,

Thanks.... Yes, I think I'm in the same boat... losing my hair, my mind, my teeth and hearing but still going stong. I'll sweet talk Santa next year and until then, I 'll use the ones I have and focus on the topless beaches.

That's the right attitude Coloma!  Focus on those topless beaches!  Good luck with the "sweet talkin' Santa" (that sounds like the title of a Country-Western Song)!  Good luck with it all and great finds to you!   Detecting

Out here along the Border, I don't use head phone for the reason I need to know what's going on around me.

We have Some BAD< BAD< BA BA BAD folks here that will take your toys, Hurt You and just plane mess up your day.

Yes The price can make a defferance.

Yes the Quality can make a Differance.

Most importent even over Quality and Price is get Compatible Head Phones.

If Your Machine Requires 8 Ohms to the Head phone you need 8 Ohm head phones.

These days there are all sorts of Impeadances on Head Phones.

4, 8,16 , 32, 135 and even more.

Trust me on this!

You DO NOT need to spend $50 or $100.00 or more to have a Kick Butt pair of Head Phones.

homefire,,

Good advise... didn't think about the "matching" of the headphones to the MD... I'll keep that in mind.

I agree that security is a problem in some places. I would be leery about headphones in the foothills in California (where I came from) because of the rattlesnakes (both human and animal types).  Luckily, here I don't need to worry about that. Coloma Gold

Its funny just talking about this. Fry's Electronics store gave me a gift card since they goofed up on some billing. (Can't beat a freebie.) Stopped by there today to burn it up, picked up some assorted stuff,  batteries , and saw a garret master sound head phones in the same aisle across from the batteries.  Oh well, in the basket it went.  Cool The gift card and $4 and out of there.
