I don't see price making a whole lot of difference in sound quality for metal detectors.
Now I can see it for stuff like water proofing, comfort, wireless, and what not.
I have a set of pioneer hdj-1000 headphones made for DJ's and they are awesome for listening to music. They are light and comfortable. But as for md'ing with them, they are no better then a pair of $20 sony's from wal-mart.

As for the impedance you can go lower then what you need.
For example. If it says 8 ohm you can go 4 ohm just don't go up.
But Homefire did make a good point that most people overlook.

Going lower could cost you your audio out put section!  Going from 8 to 4 may not but could!

Consume more battery then needed ! Cool

Ummm how would it cost you your audio output section by having earphones with less resistance (ohm's)?  If the output at the headphone jack is already at 8ohm then having headphones with less impedance (resistance) like 4 ohm should not cause any problems.
Now if we were dealing with RF then that would be a little different.

Going lower in Ohms could cause enough current to burn out your drive.

Yer talking Basic Electronics here, Da!

I recommend headphones with rare earth magnet speakers rather than the smaller, less efficient type. The sensitivity to faint sounds will reveal some of your deepest targets. Yes, the price is worth it just for that very deep coin. They run around $80-$100 a set.

I need a transistor for my S3 because the head phones shorted out.

By the time I knew what was going on it was over.

Smoke , Stink and toasted.
