Hi All,
Any tips on digging on a rocky beach?  I normally use a Stealth Scoop - excellent in the sand; however, tough going on the rocky shore.  I have purchased an inexpensive camping shovel/pick to see if that works.  The rocks are relatively small in size, but densely packed.  Using the Stealth scoop is like trying to dig pavement with a shovel.  The area that I am trying to dig in under about 2 foot of surf.  Ideas?  Equipment / technique tips?

Sounds like a plan!  LOL

One of those old Army shovels set in the 90 degree angle may help.

Quite frankly: If it is an inexpensive shovel it may not last long on rocky grounds.

A good (fold down) shovel is unfortunately not cheap but will last of a lifetime and thus safe you lots of money in the end. The two top brands and in my oppinion recommended manufacturers are:

- Glock (yes the same company that does the guns)
- Fiskars

I have fold down shovels from both of them and they are excellnt. The Glock is even better but a bit more expensive ... around 80 bucks in Europe.

Regards,

Christian

Thanks All - great tips!  I also found a sturdy telescopic tool at Lowes, a couple of days ago.  It has a small rake (like a clam rake  - only smaller) on one side and a 3" angled hoe on the other.  It was only $10 - feels pretty sturdy for the price.  It positively locks in the longer position (about 4') with a twist.  I am looking forward to giving it a try on Saturday.

You say it's like trying to dig pavement with a shovel.  I would suggest a 5ft. pinch bar or similar to break up the hard pack then you can shovel easier.  Because that bar is going to be heavy to tote around another strategy would be to get a spade bit garden shovel.  The bit is about 6" wide as opposed to about 10" for a standard shovel, they still have a good strong bit and plenty of handle.  The bonus, they weight a lot less than a bar.

Thanks Gramps.  We'll give it a try.  12 hours away from chasing those targets that sound like gold - or can slaw - time will tell.
