Go Up Go Down

Hello:

I have been hunting the beaches for years and, as detector technology and my skills have improved, found myself moving into progressively deeper water for the bigger and better finds. After having several close calls with my snorkeling equipment, I am at an impasse: do I go with hookah gear like I used with my dredge for gold prospecting (which was made illegal by the Governator!) or do I go with SCUBA gear? The idea of using hookah gear in the surf makes me nervous. SCUBA seems better, but the guys I see lumbering into the surf off La Jolla make me wonder about the possibility of greatly reduced mobility and dexterity under water. Also seems like a lot of things hanging off of you to snag on while working. Any advice from people experienced with metal detecting in the surf would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and hope everyone stays safe and has great luck with the low tides over the next few months.

The problem with Hooka in the surf (Or any large wave area) is going to be water ingress into the air intake !! Scuba gives you freedom of movement, and once in water weighs nothing, in fact with a wet suit on (Or dry suit) you´ll usually need between 6 kg and 12 kg of extra lead weights to keep you down.
Also be aware that your air time with scuba is limited, and when working you´ll use a lot more air, so will really need to keep an eye on your air guage. There´s not a lot to snag on in the surf area though, so that isn´t an issue.

Thank you very much for the reply. I was thinking the same thing for the hookah, but wanted to hear it from another person just to validate it. Also, thanks for the info on the scuba gear. I was leaning in that direction, but needed a push to get moving. About how long will the 3000 psi/80 cubic foot tanks last when full? Also, which is better in salt water, aluminum or steel? Thanks again.

I would go for steel tanks for the simple reason that aluminium only needs one sharp knock and it will probably fail it´s next test. Also aluminium has thicker walls so is HEAVIER than an equivilant steel cylinder. If you can, get a 300 bar /5000 psi steel in 10 or 12 liter as 15 liter would be unwieldy fo use in the surf. Hpw log it will last is the same as how long is a piece of string !!
It depends on how calm you are, what your physical lung volume and muscle mass is, and also how much energy you´re expending, plus the depth you go (Practically no depth in surf).
I´ve known beginners go through 232 bar in a 10 liter in 10 mins, and others would take 90 mins for the same cylinder. The more you go under water, the easier you feel, and the less air you will use.
