An old friend of mine used to do that. He had a long pole with a pulley on the end of it that he'd push over the edge of the bridge to get some range. It was around 10' long as I recall, in two pieces which he put together at the site. His theory was that people would fling things out a bit rather than drop them straight down. He also said he found that murky water rivers were far better than clear ones. He swears there's an old safe in the Swanee river in Florida. Probably empty though, he says. Who'd throw away a safe full of money?

You just reminded me that I need to call him for a chat and a cup of coffee over the phone. Might even need to make a road triip now. Thanks for that. And thanks for bringing back the memories of my old friend standing on a bridge looking as if he was fishing for a world record catfish.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
