I use a Fisher F2 at the beach in dry sand mostly. The machine chatters when hunting over wet sand. You can turn it down a bit if you like. I feel i will miss something by turning it down. I have never used it in the water. I also have a F4 that works much better at the beach. It can handle the wet sand and dry very well. The F4 weights a bit more than the F2. I found all kinds of great stuff with mt F4 that my F2 missed. Hope this helps.

Second hand Sovereign Elite or Explorer 11 would be your best bet but prices for good beach machine hold up.

Totals are true but have since delete all pictures on photobucket.

As for $400 budget, why buy something at that price and find a little when you can spend another say ? $2-300 and find lots more.
Fishers are not the best on the beach and most are pretty poor by what i see on the beach, they miss a lot.

Since the beginning of last year i have been using my Terra 705 and that last year had around £1200 and half the Jems, i have bought the Nel 13 x 12 18.75khts Tornado coil and tested it yesterday for the first time, very sensitive and much deeper than the standard coils so i will be getting the 13 x 12 7.5khts in a few weeks that should be deeper still.
Did not find much yesterday ,only a few pence but it more of a test really and the beach is poor at the moment , to much shingle on the beach. Need a storm .
Tested the Nel in the surf too and worked with very little disturbance, dropped a 5p coin in the wet and waited for a wave then scanned the coin and it gave a loud clear signal. Unlike most of the Terra coils Nel's are waterproof.

The Terra is so good that i may sell the E.Trac soon too !!

I have a fisher f75 which I use on dry sand at the beach. It is absolutely no good in the water. By the time you get the gain turned down where it doesn't false. You don't find anything. On wet (saturated sand ) it has a detection depth of about 2 inches for a US penny. I get better results  in the water by scrubbing the coil of my ace 250 on the bottom. detection depth is about 2 and a half inches on wet sand. I wouldn't recommend either machine for water hunting. Also be careful.  The 8" eliptical coil has a connection box where the wire goes into the coil. Mine wasn't sealed from the factory and water got in it and shorted it out the first time I put it in the water. I had to pry the top off. Wash the salt out and dry it with a heat lamp to get it to go again. Because of that I use silicone grease on the joint where the wire goes into the coil as an extra precaution.  Waveing

Hey Gambol1,

I've heard the Ace 250's do pretty well even in wet sand. They are good little detectors, well worth there price.

Cheers,
Jim

I don't own a Fisher but I have several detectors which all have different qualities.  All of them will find something at the beach.  Some are better than others. My old Minelab Sovereign is the best of all, that I own, at the beach.  Particularly at accuracy and depth.  But my Lobo also does well but not as deep.  I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with your Fisher particularly as you get to know the machine and get better using it.  Give yourself several hours of detecting time to really learn the machine and how to understand what it is telling you.  Just get out there and use it.  You will find out later if you want to invest more in another machine or even if it's necessary.  Nothing like experience to tell the difference. I agree, with an extra 200-300 you can really get a good MD and not have to upgrade in a year and cost you that in the difference anyway!
