I build the russian Clone PI W detector, which is actually a copy of the detector you mentioned. I can say, that it is a great machine on the dry and wet sand, but it is not so good on the real soil, because it is strongly affected by the ground effect. On the sand there is no such effect and it is really a good stable and deep machine. Actualy the letter "W" in its name means "water", because there are 10 LEDs on the detector, which helps underwater. I can say, that it takes 1 euro coin from about 30 cantimeters depth in the sand with 11 inch coil. One week ago i compared it with Surf PI 1.2 and the Clone is much better.
The difference between Clone PI W and K5i is that the K5i requires you to pay for the code of the microcontroller. The code for Clone PI W is tottally free. You can give it a try. If you decide to build it, don't use the autor's pcb. There are much better and comact pcb designs for this detector. I made mine on 4066 switch instead of the expensive ADG444. It works much stable and much deeper than the original PCB design. This PCB is not designet by me! I took it from one russian forum.
There is a picture of mine before I add the LEDs:
I'm uploading the PCB design on 4066, the HEX for the microcontroller and a pdf file with the original scematics of the autor(don't use them, just for information). There is everything you need for building one of thes cheap and good(for the sand) machines.
Please, excuse me! I know, that i dont speak english verry well, but I hope to help someone with my post.
