Good information here, Alan. That little drop off area is like the riffles in a gold pan holding all sorts of treasure from aluminum bits to gold, silver and coins of the realm. I've been water hunting since the early 1970s and noted right away that this area you describe contained shells and rocks, indicating the natural wave action was collecting things there.

Nowadays, I head straight for that point fully prepared to snorkel if I have to, but my own process allows me to stand most of the time and work.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

My days of messing  about in water are long over, these days GD in fact I havent been in the water for years. In the UK the tide goes out about a mile in Cornwall on very low tides and theres over 30 foot of water waiting to come rushing back when the tide turns hehe.
Even so most of my time these days is spent in the British Library swatting up on my favourite subject and its amazing what you can find in there.
I still have my detectors they go to my son when i kick the bucket not that he's going to use any of them but I wont be around so i wont care.
I actually started getting in the water in 80-81 using a Garret ADS master hunter highly modified then acquired an Aqua-Sport and from that time on I started to write about it and let others in on the hobby.  It wasnt mine it never was, it was anyones to be honest.
I was the first one to write about it and sometimes I wish I hadnt because theres always someone who can spoil it for everyone.

How do they spoil it, Alan? To be honest, I feel a bit of greed creeping in when I find a hot spot but I still try my best to find the owners of every piece of jewelry I find. I turn finds over to the police as required here in Western Australia and wait patiently for the 6 months waiting for the return of the items. Even though a few get claimed by their owners, those few items give me a warm feeling remembering what it is like to recover a lost item of my own. Do they spoil it by not trying to reunite the owners with their property?

Thanks for the information. I ve been to the beach to detect a few times in a year cause it's like 2 1/2 hours drive. If time permit then maybe i would like to try the technique tips given more often if i could.
I normally hunt at the dry sand to where the low tide breaks. At the wet sand most of the time when i was there detecting, is mostly compact sand meaning very hard to dig on. And to get a target out form requires effort. So thanks for your input, will try to spot and learn where to dig to maximize each dig Smiley

Thanks for the Beach Tips. Its funny I was born in West Palm Beach, Fl. and never thought about metal detecting. I just took up the hobby about 2 years ago after I had been in Tennessee for about 20 years. Frenchfry Wise Detecting
