Detecting Detecting the funny thing with us here in California is  that we have some NUTS up in Sacremento that have OUTLAWED recreational Gold Dredging  yet want to now tax the sale of Marijuana now that has to be a hard one for all you dredgers and get this another NUT wants to put a TAX on beachcombing and a permit must be applied for before one can purchase a P.I. detector, or any other on in this here state  so Thank your lucky stras my friend you live in a state that has a LOT of sane officials in the capitol, keep on finding all you can... take care

 Amen  digger gary and beachluck

Alan, thanks for a very useful post - more of a complete article than a post. I'm an old newbie, a returner, coming back to it after years away and with, what can I say, an older frame of mind? So, learning what's really going on at the sea's edge is worthy study. And the knowledge also complements the pleasure of being there on the beach. Has to be one of THE best places to be. So, I'm looking forward to equipping myself with a detector and starting to learn the secrets of my strip of coastline. Once it stops **%##@**# snowing, that is.

Go Up Go Down

Hi all

I've been reading this post with great interest.

I have spent thousands of hours on the beaches here the last 16 years.

This article is most interesting for me.

I am in constant doubts, should I go only for coins, or only for gold? Never could draw a line there, so i do a bit of the two.

The beaches here are packed with iron, that is remainings of WWII barbed wire, so I jumped on the two PI units I ever used here.

I use FBS/BBS detectors, my favourite being the Sovereign GT, which I use with the reverse disc technique on the wet sands.

My gold finds are satisfactory, twice in those 16 years did I find "BIG" ones.

This article by Mr Hassel  learnt me some things I didn't know or notice on my tidal beaches here in North Europe.

But I struggle with one english word.

I cannot find a french translation to it, except the meaning of a tool intended to cut metal.

The word is "shear". What does that mean?

I'd be thankful if someone could explain me the meaning of this word. Pray

HH

Hi, Beachcomber,

As I understand it the shear on a beach is the slope that divides the lower part of the beach from the top section. The top is the part that usually stays dry, not reached by high tides other than in storms or exceptionally high tides and the lower part being where the tides regularly come in and out. On some pebble beaches the sheer can be really steep, on flatter sandy beaches it may be a slight slope.

Can you tell me what you mean by the 'reverse technique'?

Here in the UK we have snow at the moment, so frustrating. Just have to sit tight and wait and prepare for warmer weather and getting onto the beach.

Thank you Optymyst !

That clarifies it !

The reverse disc technique with a Sovereign consists in searching in the P/point mode, checking the targets in disc. The gain is two to four inches and it has other advantages : you may sweep more deliberately, and constantly use the sens at maximum, just out of auto.

The disc threshold indicates de deepest objects, you should especially investigate those weak pinpoint signals that don't give response in disc...Deep !!

I use it at low tide marks, in the gullies. The volume should be at 3 o'clock and the threshold a little bit more than "barely audible".

Hunters like the old me who started with no motion detectors will hear those weak P/P signals better, but the more you'll practice...

HH

Great replies Beachcomber, I am now using a PI detector the Garrett Infinium.  I bet it would do Great on your beaches.  Iron signals are really high pitched and good gold and other good signals are really faint signals, both repeatable in both directions.  The only bad thing about this detector is you  have to go slow and low.  It is a water detector.

I haven't used mine in a lake here in Ohio yet, but intend to this summer.  I have used it in Virginia at Civil War Winter camp sites.  I have dug CW buttons at over a foot.  I am including a picture of the best Eagle button I found in October of '09.

I sure with I could come over your way sometime and detect.  Sound like fun.

HH, Ringfinder

P.S.  I use a water scoop that costs around $150, it has a straight wooden handle and scoop attached.  I have used it for over 10 years.  I guess you get what you pay for.  Your design looks pretty neat too!!
