Here is a tip to make your metal detecting in water easier
after choosing your area set up a grid with stakes and line to to mark off the area to be searched. This can be done in a square or rectangle or you can use a circle method by attaching a stake in the center of the area and move out the line a few feet at a time and doing a circle search. This method is best for a sandy area so you don't get hung up on obstacles when doing the circle. In a area with snags or with obstacles use the square or rectangle pattern. It takes a little while to set up but is well worth the effort and you maximize your time in the water not covering the same area over and over.

Here is something I have noticed when using a Sovereign in the water, using the 12" Sunray coil, probably concerns an Excaliber also with a 10" coil. I am doing an area that had piers out into the saltwater long time ago. I find Indian cents out there sometimes at real low tides. I notice that most of the time when I get hits on Indian cents, they are broken up sounds and not at all smooth hits, like when on land. Nickels still come in as normal nickels sound and anything gold like rings are normal. I gather the long time in salt water has ate into these Indian cents and changed the properties to make them give a different bad sounding reading. So if you are out in the salt water and get a broken up bad sounding signal, better dig it, it might be a Indian, and though some of them come up with no dates from 75 plus years in the water, many do have dates. I have dug up over 50 Indians in about 3 years and have noticed the broken up sound on most all of these. Good hunting.

I was scanning the replies to this thread and sure hope that JCPinCt was talking about indian head pennies..... Just thought it was funny that he dug up 50 indians. :D
I found lot of indian head pennies when I was in western Oregon, but they were so corroded from the salt air that the dates and some of the features couldn't be seen. :'(
