Hello again! I'm back with another question! Well, where I live, there is ALOT of water. and from what I can tell so far ALOT of good thunting places in the water! but, I'm barely gonna be able to afford a general MD, much less a waterproof one. So, does anybody know of a way to waterproof a non-waterproof detector?

Hello RedneckDigger . Welcome to this great Thunting.com forum !!! There is a good chance your Metal Detector is already waterproof from the search coil up to just under the control box coil connector . Check your manual/spec sheet or let us know the Brand and model you have . You have two choices one is easy and the other is a little more difficult . 1. You can build a new custom clear plastic enclosure with o-ring type seals for your machines PCB circuit board and control knobs . or 2 . Another option is a waterproof bag like the ones sold and used for underwater cameras . The second option will be much cheaper than the first !!............Other members are welcome to post a suggestion here !!
Regards.............Eugene

i dont usually promote walmart however in their outdoor section they have a very nice plastic water proof box with an o ring seal. comes in two sizes large and medium. medium is about the same size as my whites surf master II. plan on going back and buying it to convert a standard vlf detector into a water proof unit.  Cool it will take a little altering of the vlf unit but not much depending on what controls you want on the outside of the box. seal it up with some good silicone and verify the seal.

Eugene, can you tell us how do you do that?  put the whole MD into the bag?  or just the control box? what about the cord connecting the control box and coil?  Thanks.

Hello Metalhead . As you know almost all Metal Detector search coils and the cable are waterproof . The connector is watertight but not water proof . The bag must be placed around the control box housing and cover the connector and only a few inches of the cable . Then you can seal with waterproof  rubber silicon then tie wrap the tiny opening of plastic or USE Black heatshrink tubing with a heat gun . I do not know what brand of Metal Detector you are using or how deep you are going to dive but the plastic bag method has depth limits and is not as good as a plastic housing with o-rings , but I am sure the bag will be safe to maybe 75 feet the plastic housing with o-rings can go to 200 feet  . Just be carefull and be creative , if you dive and see any water or moderate condensation in the bag or housing then suface and re-check all the seals or sealant . I am trying to help you save money and I also want you to protect your Metal Detector $$ investment ..Others are also welcome to comment here .
Best Regards.............Eugene

I found this helpful for me too.  I do think mine is waterproof though... That is what I was told by a MD expert at the beach a few weeks ago.  He looked at it and said it was.  I have NO IDEA what brand mine is.  I bought it off ebay and all I have is numbers for the name.

3010/GC-1010 Metal Detector.  Hey, I got it for like $100...  Anyone know what kind it is?

Yours is one of many Chinese knock-offs of regular brands. They reverse engineer some of the good ones and put them in a new case. Here is a link that Eugene52 posted the other day that will help you to decide if you got a good deal or not.

Thanks for this link.  Eugene posted a picture on another thread with my exact detector.

I will try to post the picture here.  It appears that I did not do badly for my $100.
