	Wet suit vs Dry suit? « on: November 23, 2009, 07:35:08 pm »

I've never used a wet or dry suit in the water, how do they function and which would be best in cold water wading. Winter time here in Virginia gets pretty cold, although there are days when the ambient temperature outside is fairly nice but the water still is quite cold.
The use would be for wading. John in Va..

Wet suits are called that because they allow a thin layer of water to come into suit and circulate around your body--your body heats the water and allows you to stay in water that is slightly cold for longer periods of time than you could without the suit. A dry suit is another ball of wax--it keeps you entirely protected from water when you are working or whatever in water that is icey cold--water that would make your body very uncomfortable and even cause bodily injury or death if you didn't have suit. For wading in very cold water in winter--maybe you need a dry suit--or get a pair of those waders that are like a wet suit like duck hunters use in the winter months---that'd be the okay for just wading around in cool water-----but only up to about waist deep. I've worn these wet suit type waders and man they can really be a pain to get on you---I had a buddy help me pull the dang things off at end of hunt at a beach----it's a pain getting those things off you.

Johnlaw - there's lots of places to find a used wet/dry suit that might be able to help you out. Dive shops often have them, as well as sporting goods stores (where I live we have Play-it-Again Sports, which sells all kinds of gently used sporting equipment). Its a great way to try them out without making too much of an investment. :

John I have a pair of the those waders that are like a wet suit like duck hunters use. they keep you dry and warm but they are so heavy around 12 to 14 lb I am thinking about a dry suit for next year. also the waders have a steel shank in the boot. makes it hard to use your foot to pinpoint I got mine at bass pro for 159.00 on sale reg 199.00 they zip up the front . that makes it a little bit better to get into.

Hey John,
Been year's since I've been to Va. Beach great finds I'm sure. Any way Dry suit would be best for your application , you also need an under garment or possibly just long underwear and some fleece. Dry suits require constant maintenance on seals and zippers. And they are pricey . I would check Craig's list under " sporting "
I prefer a wet suit when diving. It does have it's limits but allows me time for other hobbies.
And the waders are great too. I use them right in the middle of the storm wind and rain proof.

Thanks Excaldiver...........I'm going with waders for now, the others are to pricey. If the finds come then I may upgrade. It'll be fun to see what's in the water again..
