Go Up Go Down

I live literally 1 block from Lake Michigan and less then a quarter mile from our city's beaches...also this part of the state (Michigan) has nearly an endless supply of inland lakes to detect in.  I have been out in Lake Michigan once so far this year and I could only stand to go alittle over knee deep...its dangerous cold.  So...not being a cold water fan anyways, and in order to extend my water detecting season I have decided I must invest in some cold water protection.  So the dilemma is...do I purchase a wetsuit...and if so how many "mm" thick should I get for very cold water.  Or should I get a nice pair of chest high waders?  I know I would look like less of a geek in the wetsuit...but I know I would stay warmer in the waders.  A wetsuit will cost me more but I would think it would be alittle more mobile.  Waders on the other hand could allow me to detect in unfrozen water year round...and ultimately stay much warmer then any wetsuit I can afford.  I see Gander Mountain has some nice looking Waders and not priced to bad.

Decisions, decisions....

Feedback from cold water hunters would be very much appreciated...I hope to purchase by this weekend as I am going crazy to get back in the water.  Also...I only plan to go about waist deep while the water is this cold and with any protection on.  Once the water warms up I will have no need for either...but thats a good month or more out.

Please...experienced cold water hunters please give me some advice here.

Thanks

Stick with a wetsuit chest wader's are very dangerous. A few year's ago a guy was in the water detecting and stepped in a big hole his wader's filled up right away and  he drowned  , and this is not the first time this has happened , Stick with a dry suit  , Visit your local dive shop they will be able to help you pick the right suit for your need's from there you can buy new or look around , Please be safe this is just a hobby hh

As stated above.   Waders are Killers.

Chest Waders the Worst.

You take one rogue wave , a quick fall and your wearing a Boat Anchor.

A wet suit is the way to go if you want to stand up, beat off waves and keep warm.

Don't laugh here.

Pantie hose and a regular T shirt make them a whole lot more comfortable to use.

Without Ballast Weights, you Float.

You get knocked down you can do your thing.

Panning for gold there Magic.

Two or Three pare of socks, they keep you dry and toasty.

I never use them in moving water of more then 1 ft.

Yes 1 ft of fast running water can kick your Butt.  LOL!

Ben there Got the Scares and trying not to do it again.

Well its unanimous.  Safety is first and foremost thats why I wanted some protection...safety from hypothermia.  So a wetsuit is what I will shop for.

Thank you everyone for the advice and the explaining the dangers of waders!!

I did some calling around and found a Scuba shop in a town about 30 miles away that rents wetsuits for only $10 a day....so I plan on stopping there, getting sized, and renting a wetsuit and hardsoled boots and trying it out.  I figure if I spend $30 for the weekend to try it out and get a feel for a wetsuit it would be better then jumping both feet in and just buying one to start with.  Also figure if I find a suit I like I can always shop for it online and save $$ over in-store prices.

Sounds like you have a Plan.

If your not going to need any fins, plan old deck shoes are cheap.

Cotton or Wool Socks keep you warm and dry quite fast.

I'll add my 10 cents also on the waders. DON'T!!!   One slip and take on water and your sunk. Ya can't get out of them easy when there full too!.
