I can not dispute the safety concerns about the waders in the surf; however, I sometimes use them.  When I do though, I use a chest belt to help to keep the top of the waders closed - to lessen the likelihood that they will fill with water should I slip and fall.  I have both (waders and a wet suit) - no question that the wetsuit is the safest option.
