How many of you have heard the story of the Beale Cypher? This is another treasure story where people cherry pick the facts to suit their own purposes. The Beale cypher didn't exist until they published the actual code and sold it. There are simply no records of all this gold and silver bullion that came from the western states.

This story - along with the Lost Dutchmans mine were two of the first "legendary" treasures I had ever heard about when I was a kid.

i saw it on history ch. some dude sat a tavern in va. and wrote down a code while boozing it up one night~so the story went. some guy went around in the mountains & fields looking for it,even backhoed a few spots & found jack.thats all i know

supposed to be the gold they brought back from the west buried in the mts. of va.

I saw a documentry not all that long ago that showed couple local treasure hunters on the trail of it. I still don't see evidence it even exists.

I guess thats why its treasure hunting and not treasure shopping... Grin

...It is screwed up but thats the treasure for some selling maps to a treasure that never existed.

I have always wondered why the Beale Code didn't get decoded by now. My humble guess is that mere brute force it ought to be possible to decode the numbers using modern computers nowadays. That's just my two cents though

That's one reason why people think the Beale Cypher is a hoax. A number of notable people with experience in cryptology have used some very big computers to try and solve this- to no avail.

Hello Steve,

I didn't know that some people have allready used computers on the code. Well, this would add to my thesis and yours that it is a hoax.

Also one big problem that remains with all caches is that they may have been found by chance allready by someone or that one of the original owners has claimed them a long time ago ...

A lot of people (me included) think Ward published the booklet solely for the purpose of making money off of it. There was never any evidence to support the claims of the huge gold and silver and jewelry horde being moved from New Mexico all the way to Virginia (twice). No evidence of any large jewelry purchases in St Louis at that time. I mean there has to be some documentation of something within the story itself and frankly - I've never seen any of it. And like I said there was some attempts by some noted cryptologist using modern computers to crack it but they all failed.
