Hi all

I live right at the beach so need an MD which will do well there...even in the wet sand as well as being a good all rounder on land.

but here comes the catch... I'm a student! budget!
really don't want to spent more than $550
Also I like a modern digital interface and modes - all metal, jewelry etc (easy to use and preferably not too heavy as I'm a light weight)

Some names I have come across in my research which may be right?
Fisher F5
Garrett Ace 350

any suggestions or advice on these or others which fit the bill?

Thanks so much! Smiley

hello,

that question will get you so many opinions you'll probably be more confused than you are now.
but i'll start it off. i've been detecting beaches in the northern and southern states for 20 years. the 2 detectors you mentioned would not be my choices for saltwater beaches. because of you price range, if i were you, i'd look for a used, but good condition higher end detector instead of a detector new in your price range. you might be able to find a bargain. my favorites for the beach are the older minelab sovereign xs, the older whites eagle, whites dfx, minelab explorer. avoid minelab musketeer for beach use. good for land but not so hot for beach. my personal favorites for stability at the beach with minimum false signals are the minelab sovereign and the whites eagle models. i used to also have a fisher. the older cz's were good at the beach too. one of my favorites was the cz 5 but hard to find used. the fisher is a great land machine too. . you'll be getting a lot of different opinions here i'm sure. remember they are opinions and you'll have to see what would work best. but i would go used because a new detector in your price range won't be very good. good luck

oh dear I think the bug has hit cuz I've now seen that my budget is actually perhaps a little unrealistic for what I want.
Afraid I really like the new interfaces with digital. hence Fisher.
Seems the Fisher F70-75 would be a good bet?

Final choice:Huh??
Fisher F75 limited edition or
Minelab SE Pro

what is best? are these the best in price range (now looking at about $1200! Shocked I have lost it I'm sure, addicted before I've begun)

Any advice please! want to make purchase soon so can get to me in South Africa before Christmas haha Grin

Thanks to all (think I've bombarded this form in the past two days!  :Smiley

i would reserach the 2 models you are interested in extensively for your application. i think you mentioned a lot of beach type hunting if that is so you would have to find out if it is capable for that. find out if the machine will cancel mineralization. a machine could be excellent on land but a horrible beach machine. now that you have raised you price range you can find a great detector, but it has to be capable of what you want it to do and high price won't gaurantee that. most important are the needs for the areas you will search. bells and whistles are good if they are the right ones. again just an opinion. research, research, research those models. check on line reviews..i believe you can check reviews here on this site too...a great feature. add used Minelab excaliburs and Tesoro Sand/Tiger Sharks to your list... If you plan on spending a lot of time at the beach, not having to worry if the control box gets hit by a wave will be a big plus.

Go with the Ace350. All reports look good based on pre-release testing by Garrett. They never fail to make a good product.

A discovery two coil unit, a whites two coil, a fisher two coil and a Garrett GTI 2500 with a eagle eye two coil unit installed these will all go very deep on larger objects..

Go for the Minelab.
They are a little difficult to "learn" but as you progress it'll get easier.
They can be used in just "switch on and go" and as you get more experienced you can modify settings to your own taste.
They are superb on both land and salt wet beach.
One tip .... if you get a minelab, swing the coil fairly slowly!
