Go Up Go Down

It seems many people state the Garrett Ace 250 to be a good beginner model.

Why not the 150?

This is my first buy obviously haha and am not specifically interested in coin hunting. More interested in relics, gold, prospecting.

I have read the 'md review' sites, comparison sites, used vendor online comparison tools and read a bit here and other forums. From what I have gathered, it seems I should look into something higher end than the Ace 250 but for my first detector that seems overkill.

Would I be just as well off buying the Ace 150 instead of the 250 to get the 'feel' for metal detecting? I am already engulfed in rockhounding and meteorite scraping. I love it. haha I have wanted a metal detector since I was a child, but my grandparents(raised by them) would not buy one for me due to cost and the fact they 'urged' me away from minerals as I guess I got interested in the metaphysical aspect around 8 years old and they did not like that because it veered from the Lutheran limitations they had set upon me. But I just turned 30 and have my own child and we both love being outdoors getting our hands dirty and taking home cool rocks to clean up and look at so now its time to 'make my dreams a reality' as they say. haha
I guess there is the possibility that I may not even enjoy it - however doubtful I am of that though. Smiley

When I contemplate purchasing the 150 instead of the 250, I think
"should I just buy the $60 walmart model?"
then think
"No way! I should save for the 250 at least!"

Then it spirals around again into confusion.

$250 is 'about' the max(maybe $279 LOL) I would be able to afford. And since the 'bug' has bitten me bad, I am very excited and lacking restraint/patience to save for a fancier model, I am asking here in hopes for guidance as I plan on purchasing next Thursday(payday, haha). Thank You.

My son has the 150.
Got it for him as it was nice and lightweight (he's 11).
It's a REALLY good detector.
Found some Roman and Medieval coins with it at surprising depths (tiny "farthing" at 7+ inches)
Same depth as the 250, just a few less functions.
Go for it...........

Any Detector that gets you going is a good detector.

My first was a No Name BFO back in the 70's and it's been down hill since. LOL!

The 250 has the edge on the little one, but you have to start some place.

A pile of seasoned hunters use the 250 as a back up or Fast Easy hunter because they Kick Butt for what they are.

The only thing I've heard bad about the 250 is they don't do wet salt sands too good.   People turn down the Sense a little and seem to have found they work quite well. Go Figure?

If you go with the lesser your going to want the better latter!

Some people purchase a toy and become upset not finding anything and drop the Idea.

I can't tell you what to purchase because only you know what you expect.

On the other hand , you can purchase a unit that is above your head and just not grasp all the gizmos and bells.

Find your unable to make it function and give up.

Running outta Breath here! LOL!

It's all up to You.

The 250 running at 6khz is not a gold prospecting machine so to say.   It would see the larger gold but not what your most likely to find around here.

Thanks! I figure if I go out and buy the 150 today(dont tell my wife!) and enjoy myself, I could always buy a 250 or even another brand/etc. in a couple of months(or less? uh oh!).  Kiss

fieldmaus, I will just add that you can also try your local craigslist and get a really good detector a lot cheaper. Just the other day I saw a Tesoro Golden Sabre in a great shape and the guy was asking $100, the very next day it was already sold so you have to be fast. My advice is do not rush the decision, take your time and find your best deal!
