Generally I don't recommend another forum on a forum, but as many of the members here are also on other forums as well (you really need to be on as many as possible for a good overall picture), I am breaking the rule and I am telling you to also look here as they also have many complete details of some really good metal detectors:-

I am still in the middle of building the IGSL with DIY coils, from an excellent kit from SilverDog.
A slightly simpler version to start with is the TGSL, again a kit is available from SilverDog, and there is a lot of friendly folks to help and support you in whatever you decide to do.......
Recently there has been an addition of an LCD system (VDI) using a PIC for the intelligence, to differentiate between targets, that can be added to various detectors if wished....Program is included.
I personally would recommend as a first a VLF, but generally PIs are even simpler to make (usually only one coil and no nulling), but many PIs have no form of discrimination at all, but do go to a good depth......not all PIs find gold well and may need to be either adjusted or changed (that is from word of mouth, not personal experience!)
I do have full details of a Polish deep PI that I intend to eventually build, probably next year, that uses normal parts and does not require any fantastic electronic knowledge, also I have translated enough of the original documents to allow a good build and setup....
Look here and if it interests you further, just drop me a line and I will post all the infos that I have for you to download, OK?

The infos include a schematic & PCB design for Eagle CAD as well as my Polish to English translation giving parts lists and setup infos in English.
