Hi,
What are the possibilities of getting fatally hurt while metal detecting ?
I could think of following :
1) Hitting a buried electric cable, landmine while digging
2) Booby traps
3) Poisonous snakes or insects
4) Unearthing something deadly that has been buried
5) Medical or radioactive waste
6) Deadly microbes

Has anyone heard or encountered anything dangerous ?
What precautions must one take before choosing a site and during detecting?

Lions, Tigers and Bears, OH MY!

Other then a few Rattle Snakes, A few Crazy people and a Irate Rancher that Just Knew He owned the BLM land I was on, Not much. Funny

You have to watch your back along the Border here.

There was a guy eaten by a Mtn Lion not long ago about 1/4 mile from a spot I go Gold Panning.

most dangerous is to much time in the field syndrome,,,, resulting in the mad killer wife syndrome, that's why you buy your wife a detector, and a gold pan, resulting in the  happy marriage syndrome!

Yeah, it can be fatal....but then so can crossing the street or taking a shower.  As with anything else you need to be aware of your surroundings and exercise the appropriate level of caution for the general area, the conditions, and specific site. (btw, where I'm at stepping on a landmine isn't a big concern, but falling into a mine shaft is a possibility.)

I Carrie a .22 Ruger  Mark II on my hip side for Bears and Lions.

The sling shot in my butt pocket is for the Rabid Squirrels and Bad stuff!  I use Cat Eyes and Steelies with that one!

 Great
