Go Up Go Down

I have learned a lot through the good grace of this forums members. However there is one thing that I am totally confused about. I have done some serious research all over the web concerning coil covers. Here are the results.
•   Some will not hunt without one citing that coil wear and damage is a common occurrence. Some say that it is only needed in rocky terrain or heavy overgrowth. It is not needed for beach hunting.
•   Others state that it is absolutely needed for the beach as sand is very abrasive,
•   Some say the covers are a problem because of Dirt entering between the cover and coil. And That the covers are difficult to remove in order to clean. Some coat the coil with toothpaste or silicone to help future removal.

•   Others seal the cover’s lip with silicone to prevent dirt from entering. Some claim this doesn’t work and makes it more difficult to remove.

•   Some coat the coil with truck bed liner, plasticoat or silicone in lieu of a cover.

•   Others state they have been hunting for years, in all terrains without a cover and have had no coil problems as a result of excessive wear.

•   Many say if you use it the way it was intended, there is no need for a cover

•   Some said the covers affect depth detection.

•   And as one said, If they were needed why are they not supplied with the detector?
I don’t know what to make of this. Do I need a cover? Should I spray the coil with some sort of protection? Or should I just leave well enough alone?

I agree with Bomber. Coils are expensive, covers are not. My granddad used to say " Better safe than out a lot of money." Grin

I agree!  I like coil covers for that little bit of extra protection.  Better safe, than sorry!  Detecting

Last year I detected in a stubble field for about 9 days and when I checked my coil
the edge of the cover had lost the grained pattern on the left and right sides and was more rounded and smooth
so that just shows what stubble can do to a coil cover and that was sweeping 5" off the ground.
and if your beach detecting just remember what sand paper can do to plastic or wood so the effects
would be the same on your coil,

If your hunting beach sands just the few times you scrub the sand is enough to blow holes over time. Shocked

Just like Sand Paper!

thanks to all for your input.. I have a coil cover for my new DFX300 but did not understand that they are very important. After reviewing the above comments I  ordered coil covers for the new 6 X 10 eclipse and the old XLT that I have.  You guys give good advise!!

Thanks to all. Looks like you all prefer covers. What about coating the coil with bedliner, liquid plastics etc? I am not trying to save money. I just want to avoid the hassle that many claim is a big problem of removing and cleaning after each outing.
Thanks
Conner

Bed liner is good if the coil has no warranty on it.

All the foreign material problems can be solved with electrical tape covering the seem.  No Big Deal.

I didnt consider the warranty.
I can see where that could be a problem.
Thanks
