I carry enough Junk.   I don't use a pin pointer.   Once you figure out your machine, you will know were the goodies are.

If Double D, Remember the Lobe will be in the middle of the coil and from front to back.

Most folks pin point on the heel or nose of the coil.

The Garrett Pro-Pointer is the most rugged time saving accessory you will ever buy.  I can't recommend it enough.  With features like auto tune, audio and vibration alarms as well as water and dirt resistant it blows away the competition.  It even comes with a holder you can put on your belt for easy access.  Get one and you will love it!

Ridge Runner,

There actually is a little trick that is not known by most pro-pointer users.  If you want to lower the sensitivity and really only pinpoint the exact location of the target then what you do is find the point in the hole where you get your loudest signal.  You then quickly turn off the pro-pointer and right back on.  You have now 'detuned' the pro-pointer and it will be able to more accurately pinpoint the buried target.  The auto tune properties of the pro-pointer sets the baseline threshold immediately when it is turned on (usually away from a metal target), by turning it back on in the presence of the target you have now increased that baseline threshold and you must be right on the target in order to receive a response from the pro-pointer.  I hope the video below explains the process a little more.

A Garrett Pro-Pointer is a must have for any serious metal detectorist!  I have used many different pin pointers, and also hunted without one just using my MD....the Garrett Pro-Pointer by far is the absolute best investment I made in the hobby after getting my machines.  Plenty of YouTube videos you can watch and see it in action.
