Some people use test gardens to get use to their machines "as I have" and some don"t.
If you don't mind a little planning and a little work then it's a great thing to have.
You may want to put in a few other metals into your garden also,nails,screws,pop tops,bottle caps,iron and so on.This will give you an idea of how your machine reacts to junk " or what I consider junk"
As Homefire stated all the grounds that your detecting may not be the same as what's in your garden, so your machine at times will react differently in other soils. That's just how it goes.
I have had 5 machines in my time,3 of which I still have including my newest one from this year.I started my test garden in 2001with my second detector and ran them all through the garden just to test all the tones and pin pointing and I must say that it worked for me.
If you decide to make yourself a garden make a nice one and have fun.
