Hi to all you ground hunters, This is kind of a new field to me but i want to get started since i picked up this unit at a garage sale. ($5) This unit needs fixing which i will attempt to do. When it's turned on there is a full tone that can not be adjusted in any way from any of the controls. Does that mean the coils are open or shorted or is it some internal electronic imbalance. So anyway i just started to enjoy this start into the repair of the unit and so here is the 1st post! Enjoy all your good operating metal detectors!

Peace & Love... budster of the Catskills

Thanks Eugene2 for the quick response. i need 14 more posts to become a full member so then i will be able to download those schematics. In the meantime , i am an owner of a Garrett GTA 350 which is nice, but i am old fashioned and like analog meters and tones. Maybe that unit is too "user friendly" or i just don't know how to appreciate it properly.... Found some small change here and there, but it never got to me like this one has even though it's broken at this time. It will be fixed!  .......Happy Hunting..... Welcome to these august forums, mate.

Good luck with your Whites machine. The coil is indeed the most likely cause of the symptoms you are seeing. That being said, you should check both the coil wires for continuity through the coil itself and then the connectors on the coil wire and the box. Mechanical items have a higher risk of damage and failure than the electronics inside. Then, check all of your knobs and switches. A machine as old as that one (20+ years) will probably have wires that are brittle and solder connections that are a bit corroded over time. The corrosion can work itself between the wire and the solder joint causing an open circuit. Give it a really thorough visual inspection inside and out after you check the coil and its wiring.

On your coil, check continuity between pins 2 & 3 and then 4 & 5. If they read near to zero, they are probably all right. If not, look closely at where the coil wire goes into the coil body for damage or bent looking cable. Then open the connector at the end to see that all is well in there.

You have much to do, Grasshopper . . . but first you must take the coin from the palm of my hand . . .

Hello budster2. Let us know if you are using the Whites 4B search coil . Anyway the RX [recieve coil] should read around 35 ohms  resistance and the TX [Transmit] should be around 7 ohms resistance ..... Also let us know the exact Whites Metal Detector model number on the  case . So we do not go off in the wrong Direction !!!  Shocked
Best Regards........... Great.............Eugene

A little more info for you, 32 ohms on 1&2 and 10 ohms on 4&5. It is a 5000/d G.E. B. unit patent 4,030,026 with a RED panel meter. The search coil has a blue label on it saying "Ground Exclusion Balance"  It will be a little while before i scope the signals from it. It's a long story but "my better half" doesn't like me to pick up 'trash' so this is going to be a clandestine operation. Ha!

Hello Again . The search coil is good and is in Spec. !!!! The schematic I posted is correct . So the next step is take the case off and make a visual inspection , solder joints , loose wires . Next step is disconnect power and spray with evaporative spray cleaner all switches ,potentiometers , rotary swiches [if any] . Evaporative electrical contact cleaner is sold at most electronic parts suppliers , frys Electronics , Radio Shack . Then after the cleaning re-apply power . It might be fixed , if not start taking d.c. voltage readings across the board like transistors, voltage regulators and check the supply voltages on each integrated circuit . Take your time , be carefull and Have Fun . It sounds like you already have experience in electronic repair so just Keep us posted !!!
Regards............Eugene
