Minelab X-Terra 705

Go Up Go Down

Since coming down with "detecting" fever I have decided to purchase a starter detector (not sure which one yet) but the goal is to find enough treasure and other stuff to maybe pay for a more advanced machine down the road like the E-Trac. Any flaws in that plan that jump out? Should I start with a Minelab machine if my goal is a Minelab machine or does it matter? Thinking about the X-terra 305. Thanks for any input in advance!  Beer Chug

I suggest you start with a low end detector that can become a good backup when needed. There are two reasons to have a backup machine. One is for when your main machine fails for one reason or another. The second is for when you have a friend you want to take out with you one day.

I suggest also that you look into a Tesoro Compadre. Look at KellyCo for the best price new or on eBay for a second hand one. These guys are "turn on and go" machines making them very worthy for beginners but a superior performer despite that. That model is always with me when I go out. It's a fun little machine with a terrific ability to sniff out really good stuff.

In a year of weekends, you can buy two top line detectors. Go out one day a week and in a year you can buy yourself a top notch machine. Trust me. It does build up quickly.

That's kind of what I was thinking but wasn't sure how quickly 'finds" can add up, I guess it depends on your location and how many times you get out there also, but it sounds like it's doable. The back up idea is solid and makes sense, I have been away from the activity for decades so the learning curve might be steep with a higher end machine right away.... Thanks for the input always appreciated!   Beer Chug

Finds? Well, just go with this for a few seconds.

Imagine you get out one day a week. I typically find 100 coins each time I go out and one, maybe two pieces of jewelry and tones of garbage. Just the coins alone at that rate will equal more than 5,000 coins per year. A typical mix per day might net $8,00, some of them silver coins thereby increasing beyond the intrinsic. That comes out to $400 per year or more in cash alone. Let's allow 5 gold rings for a poor year. Each will average $200 bringing the total of $400 plus $800 to $1,200.

Factor in the fact that your fitness level will increase by a great deal and next year you can do it faster because of increased skills. But never mind. You've already saved enough for a fine machine.

One year for me nets about $900 in quarters alone. Add 15 gold rings, and, well we go to dinner a few nights a week. Happy Hunting, mate!

That's the kind of thing I want to hear! The great aspect of this particular activity is you get outside, you get to uncover history, you learn more about your local area and other places than just reading about it and BONUS you get paid to do it! I'm an avid photographer so this fits right in with that activity as well....I'm actually surprised I haven't taken the plunge sooner... Thanks again!  Beer Chug

My take!

Your not going to find Riches or Treasure.

Your going to find your Riches and Treasures in time spent in the the out side away from the TV and Ugly stuff.

Just enjoy the great out doors and have a life.

Some day you may find a few goodies and then your going to Understand.

Trust me here.

The Treasure is in your Brain.

Some of us find some serious money wonce in a while.

Most Don't.

But it happens.

Looks like you're advising everyone to stay home, mate. Good strategy. Eliminate any competition.

Grin Grin When I went out detecting with Peter at one of our Boer war site I would find loads of trash and I mean loads, any way when ever I found trash I'd shout out like I had found gold LOL this got Peter quite frustrated to my delight. When I go out detecting I do it with an open mind and primarily just to have fun so when I do find something nice, well it's just so much nicer and when I don't find anything good it's OK too but I always seem to find something of interest.

Peter is so gullible that his lips are full of fishhook holes from where he removed them. Keep up the good work, Xavier.
