Can you describe your digging technique, so I can have an idea of how best to extract my treasures Smiley. I actually have an idea but want to make sure I am not mistaken. When you first pinpoint a target I would use a small probe like an ice pick to tap surface areas to make sure it's not right on the surface before digging, next dig a small target hole with the sod  (if any) intact, search the sod clod then search the hole, rinse and repeat as necessary. Most importantly leave the area in better condition than you found it! Pack out your trash and replace your divots...so to speak. I use these same rules in my off roading. Tread lightly! Beer Chug

Asked ans answered! you may not get a response to improve on your method. I would add check the hole after you have found your target...it may not be alone.

If my target ID reads gold or silver, I use a backhoe. Warning! You have to watch out for underground pipes and wires.

OK, for real now. I use a rounded point screw driver. It's about 15 inches long and the top has been smoothed out to look like a rounded edge screwdriver. It will scratch a coin if I don't use it carefully but after all these years, it serves me well. I rounded the tip off with a bench grinder many years ago and the soil has made it even smoother. Coin rescue is easy.

My technique is to pinpoint as much as I can and then dig straight down about an inch off of the center of my target. I then wiggle the screwdriver giving me finger room. Then I pry up a little and see if I can feel the coin with me free hand's fingers. When I do, I push it against the screwdriver tip and bring it up. After checking the hole, it's a breeze to make the soil look as if it was never disturbed.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
